The 2025 Asian Cup Under-22 Boxing Championships will be held in Sri Lanka in May, the Sri Lanka Boxing Federation recently officially announced.
Accordingly, the tournament is scheduled to be held in Sri Lanka from May 10th to 24th this year.
However, Sri Lanka has not hosted a top-level Asian boxing tournament since 1969.In such a context, it is also noteworthy that a major Asian regional boxing tournament is being held in Sri Lanka for the second time. Previously, the Asian Boxing Championships were held in 1969 at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium in Colombo.
It is said that plans have been made to hold the matches of this tournament at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium in Colombo and the Galle Face Stadium in Colombo. The final matches of the recently concluded National Championship Boxing Tournament were also held at the Galle Face Stadium in Colombo.
Boxers born in 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006 will be eligible to participate in this year's Asian Under-22 Boxing Championships. Boxing sources say that athletes born in 2007 and 2008 will also have the opportunity to participate in this tournament.
However, it is also a notable event that Sri Lanka has been awarded the hosting rights of this Asian Cup Boxing Championship based on the success of the program undertaken by the Sri Lanka Boxing Federation to develop boxing in Sri Lanka and enhance its quality in the past.
Kazakhstan hosted the last Asian Cup Boxing Championship in 2024. The tournament was held in April and May of 2024.
